IT Management Jobs on the Rise.
Good news for technology executive wannabes: Openings for new CIO and IT-management jobs were up slightly in the third quarter, according to executive search firm ExecuNet. New job listings for CIOs were up 3%, while other IT-management job listings grew 5% in the third quarter, ended Sept. 30, compared with the second quarter, ended June 30. While the uptick is modest, the growth represents more than just a few hundred new jobs across the country, says ExecuNet founder and CEO David Opton. "These [job openings] don't just represent investment in human capital, they mean also hardware, systems, products" and other technology investments that had been put on the back burner at many companies over the last few years, Opton says. "Companies had been holding back a lot," he says. "Now there's more steam." .

"Interview Checklist"
You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Being prepared is crucial to making that impression a good one.

Do your homework
· Research the company, the industry and the competition and list 10 questions to ask the interviewer about the job, the company and the industry.
· Find out how to pronounce your interviewer's name.
· Determine the appropriate dress for an interview by calling or visiting the company.
· Locate the company on a map and find out how long it will take you to get there. If you can, visit the company beforehand to ensure you can find the company on the day of your interview.
Gather your tools
· several copies of your resume
· a list of your references
· a pad of paper for notes and a pen
Prepare your script
Other than the typical interview questions, interviewers like to ask behavioral questions. Prepare two answers (success stories) to these types of questions. Examples of these questions include:
· Where do you see yourself in five years?
· Do you like working alone or in a team environment?
· Give me a specific example of a time when you used good judgment and logic in solving a problem.
· Give me an example of a time when you set a goal and were able to meet or achieve it.
· What is your typical way of dealing with conflict? Give me an example.
· Tell me about a time when you had too many things to do and you were required to prioritize your tasks.

During the interview
Ask questions and listen; read between the lines. At the conclusion, thank the interviewer and determine the next steps. Ask for the interviewer's business card so you can send a follow-up letter.

Seal the deal
Make sure you write a follow-up thank-you letter, reminding the interviewer of your qualities. Be sure to follow up with a telephone call within the time frame set during the interview to ask: where the company is in the decision process, whether you can provide any additional information, or if they would like to schedule another interview. Follow up at least once a week unless given a specific timeframe for the decision-making process. This will demonstrate your continued interest in the company.
"You did a wonderful job! Everything was boiled down and then put together well. The components were reassembled in a very good way. I was extremely pleased with the overall result."
- Tom H., Project Manager -
